The first settlement of Groß-Enzersdorf dates back about 1000 years, with the first documented mention in 1160. The closest district to Groß-Enzersdorf is the 22nd district of Vienna, which is also known as "Donaustadt". It is located east of the city center and is Vienna's most populous district. The 22nd district covers almost a quarter of the total area of the Vienna municipal territory and is characterized by its comprehensive appearance. In addition to numerous green spaces and recreational areas, which account for almost 50% of the total area of the 22nd district, there are numerous large-scale residential and individual housing developments, such as the Donau City district, which is characterized by office and high-rise residential buildings. Historically, the 22nd district was created in its current form in 1954. Over time, many housing estates developed there, in 1979, for example, the exterritorial area of the UN was created and in recent years, the office towers of the "DC Towers" opened there, of which Tower 1 is so far the tallest building in Austria. Today, the 22nd district is an up-and-coming district with good infrastructural connections, many recreational areas such as the old Danube and the urban district of Donaucity, which is dominated by office buildings and can be easily reached by subway lines 1 and 2. Vienna's largest shopping center, the Donau Zentrum, located in the 22nd district, is also particularly well known, with its endless stores, restaurants and cafés.
The Danube Floodplains National Park is located in close proximity to the property and offers an ideal place to experience the regional center of environmental education. The Danube Floodplains National Park preserves the last great river floodplain landscape in Central Europe on an area of 9,600 hectares.
The Urban Lakeside Aspern in the 22nd district of Vienna is one of the largest urban development projects in Europe. In the next few years, the district will be home to over 20,000 people who will live and work here. In the center of the Urban Lakeside is the namesake artificial lake, which serves residents as a recreational area. According to the urban planning concept 15,000 new office jobs are also being created alongside more than 10,000 apartments. Four parks and green spaces are available to the residents of the Urban Lakeside to ensure a high quality of life. For the cityscape, huge and anonymous building blocks will be avoided; instead of these, townhouses with different styles will be created. The focal points of the residential building model are: Climate friendliness, affordability, social sustainability, functional mixing and architectural diversity.
The Marchfeld, located between the two capitals Vienna and Bratislava, is one of the largest plains in Austria with partly still hidden charms. Wide fields, rolling hills and the Danube floodplains are characteristic of the landscape. In the south, the Marchfeld is bordered by the Danube. The region thus has the largest share in the Danube Floodplains National Park. The eastern border (with Slovakia) is formed by the Morava River, the northern one by the Northern Railway and the western one by the trans-Danubian districts of Vienna (Floridsdorf and the Danube City). The Marchfeld Canal (shown in the city coat of arms) cuts through the urban area of Gerasdorf over a length of about 5 km.
The Donau Zentrum, built in 2009, is a shopping center in the 22nd district of Vienna and can be reached by bus 26A in only 40 minutes. On an area of about 225,000 m² there are more than 250 business, gastronomy and entertainment businesses and make the Donau Zentrum (together with the connected Donauplex) the largest shopping center in Vienna. The Donau Zentrum is characterized by its extensive shopping offer and is also home to a cinema and numerous restaurants.
