Location

Welcome to Klosterneuburg

Just beyond the northern city limits of Vienna lies the town of Klosterneuburg, which derives its name from the centrally located Klosterneuburg Canons' Monastery. The proximity to the metropolis of Vienna also explains the attraction and charm of Klosterneuburg, as the city has been growing continuously since 1971. With about 27,600 inhabitants on 76.2 km², Klosterneuburg is one of the twenty largest cities in Austria. Likewise, the population of Klosterneuburg is characterized by a purchasing power above the Austrian average.

South of Klosterneuburg, Kahlenberg with its impressive view over Vienna forms a natural border and an extensive recreational area. To the east of Klosterneuburg, the Danube forms the natural city boarder and is popular, especially in summer, with both Klosterneuburg residents and Viennese people who want to escape the city. In addition to the direct road connection, Vienna's city center can also be reached by public transportation within 20 minutes.

Discover the surroundings

Klosterneuburg combines the best of two worlds: on the one hand, the immediate proximity to the metropolis of Vienna and, on the other hand, the local mountains with the extensive Vienna Woods as a recreational area. Due to the ideal connection via the direct access to the Klosterneuburger Straße, which leads directly to Vienna, Vienna can be reached by car in a few minutes. You can also reach the center of Vienna by public transport in 20 minutes by train.

Klosterneuburg Abbey

The history of Klosterneuburg is closely connected with the history of the Augustinian Canons' Monastery, which also contributes significantly to the name Klosterneuburg. Originally, the foundation stone of Klosterneuburg Abbey was laid in the 12th century. After several centuries of reconstruction, the monastery today presents itself as an impressive ensemble of medieval, baroque and historic buildings and houses an important art collection. With over 108 hectares of vineyards, the monastery also plays an important role in wine growing. This makes it not only one of the largest, but also the oldest winery in Austria. Originally founded in 1114, the winery is considered an important regional economic factor and manages to adapt to modern requirements despite its awareness of tradition. Since 2009, Klosterneuburg Abbey has been the first winery in Central Europe to offer a CO2-neutral wine.

In addition to viticulture, the monastery also plays a major role in agriculture and forestry, real estate, and culture and tourism, as the monastery is open to visitors all year round and is considered one of the most important sights in the country. At the same time, the monastery's individual business enterprises place great emphasis on sustainability, CO2 reduction and social responsibility.

Danube Island

The Danube Island is not only part of the flood protection system, but also one of the most important local recreation areas of Vienna and Klosterneuburg. It is an artificial island up to 250 m wide between the Danube and the New Danube and has a lot to offer for people, animals and plants. The Danube Island is a popular cycling route and is also excellent for water-related recreational activities. Several very popular public lidos can be found along its banks, including the most famous of them all, the Gänsehäufel. A variety of sailing schools and boat rental facilities can also be found along the old Danube.

Klosterneuburg lido

The lido Klosterneuburg offers on its approx. 28ha large leisure and swimming area besides the classical swimming pool facilities also a natural Danube oxbow. The bathing area of the lido delights bathers of all ages with an adventure pool with water slide, current canal, waterfall, floor bubbles, massage bay, sports pool as well as children's pool and sun sail. For sports enthusiasts, the lido offers numerous activities.

Kahlenberg near Vienna

The Kahlenberg belongs to the Vienna Woods and is a landmark of Vienna as well as a traditional Sunday excursion destination for the Viennese, since from the Kahlenberg you have a view of the whole of Vienna and, if the visibility is good, as far as the Little Carpathians in Slovakia. Its peak overlooks the Vienna Basin by about 320 meters. From the Stefaniewarte, which is located on the highest point of the mountain, you can also see parts of Lower Austria. Next to the observation tower, which carried broadcasting antennas from 1953 to 1956, there is a 165-meter-high guyed steel tube mast of the ORF, which is used for broadcasting TV and FM programs as well as for directional radio purposes. This transmission mast, erected in 1974, supports elevated operating rooms (which is untypical for such constructions) and has shaped the appearance of Kahlenberg ever since.

On the mountain plateau just below the summit stands the small church of St. Joseph, in front of which there are bus stations and a large parking lot. From there, it is only a few steps to the panorama terrace on the slope that descends to Vienna. Here, until about 2004, there was a restaurant built by the famous architect Erich Boltenstern in the 1930s. Parts of this former restaurant, the old terrace as well as the adjacent hotel ruin, which has been vacant for many years, were demolished and an apartment house was built instead in 2007.

In addition, there is a (much modernized) restaurant and a new viewing terrace on the plateau. As a conclusion in the direction of Stefaniewarte, the Modul University Vienna, a private university of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, was established in partly old, partly new building fabric, which started its operations in the winter semester 2007/2008.
