The 23rd district, also called "Liesing", is located in the southwest of Vienna and borders on the southern district border with Lower Austria. Liesing is home to around 106,000 people, and the district's population has almost tripled since 1960.

More than 100 km² of green space is available to the residents of Liesing on 320 km². This high proportion of green spaces and recreational areas, such as the Mauerer Wald and the proximity to the Lainzer Tiergarten, makes Liesing a sought-after district to live in. In addition to the popular residential areas, Liesing is also home to the important industrial center of Inzersdorf, which extends into the district area of Siebenhirten. Resident companies include the well-known manufacturer of trucks Rheinmetall MAN, the Austrian State Printing Office and several logistics centers, which take advantage of the excellent location near the A21 highway and the city center of Vienna.

Historically, the 23rd district in its current form with its 8 district parts was created in 1954 from parts of the former 25th district. Today Liesing is one of the most popular districts of Vienna, because the city center is easily accessible owing to the great public infrastructure such as the U6 subway line or several rapid transit lines and offers its residents many recreational areas to escape the stress of everyday life.

The 23rd district in Vienna, also known as Liesing, is home to parts of Vienna's largest recreational area, the Lainzer Tiergarten. In addition to the many recreational and leisure areas, the district is home to one of Vienna's largest industrial hotspots. Many residents especially appreciate the family-friendly and quiet residential areas of the 23rd district with enough space for family and sports activities.

Maurer Forest - Lainzer Tiergarten

Through the more than 4 km² large excursion area of the Maurer Wald, the Lainzer Tiergarten is accessible and is part of the European nature reserve "Wienerwald-Thermenregion". Via the Gütenbachtor in Liesing the nature reserve of the Lainzer Tiergarten is accessible to the public. The Lainzer Tiergarten is a zoo with free-ranging wildlife in an extensive forest area. The Lainzer Tiergarten is mainly located in the west of Vienna with a small part in the Lower Austrian community of Laab im Walde. The 245 km² large Tiergarten is surrounded by a wall with a length of about 22 kilometers, which encloses the wildlife. The Lainzer Tiergarten is best known for its large population of wild boar, but also houses deer, roe deer, fallow deer and European mouflon. Nowadays, the Lainzer Tiergarten is a popular destination for exursions and offers hikers as well as joggers a vast and paved network of trails.

Riverside Shopping Center

Between 2008 and 2012, more than 450 apartments were built on the site of the former Liesing brewery, and the Riverside shopping center with more than 55 stores and a wide range of gastronomic offerings was opened. Due to the central location of the shopping center in the 23rd district and the good accessibility, both by car and public transport, the residents of Liesing can complete all important errands and daily shopping here.

Industrial area Liesing

With the foundation of the plant of the brick manufacturer "Wienerberger", Inzersdorf and large parts of Liesing have become an important industrial center. In Inzersdorf citizens and visitors will also find a vast wholesale market of Vienna on an area of 3 km². The wholesale market Vienna, formerly called "Großgrünmarkt Wien-Inzersdorf", is the most important wholesale location for food in Austria. It sells not only fruit and vegetables but also flowers, meat and fish. About 70% of the total Austrian turnover of fruit and vegetables takes place at the Vienna wholesale market. The industrial area extends further from Inzersdorf into the area of Siebenhirten and from there into the adjacent industrial areas in the districts of Liesing, Erlaa as well as Atzgersdorf and is bordered by the southern railway line and the "Liesingbach". Among the best-known companies that have their headquarters in the 23rd district include the Austrian State Printing Office and the tool manufacturer Hilti Austria.

One of the most important economic factors in Liesing are the Mauer winegrowers and their viticulture, which has existed since the late Middle Ages. Today, most of Mauer's winegrowers are located in Maurer Lange Gasse and are mainly known for offering their self-pressed wines in their own Heurigen restaurants. Unlike many Heurigen establishments in northern Vienna, such as Grinzing and Neustift am Walde, the Heurigen in Mauer are hardly ever frequented by tourists and are considered an insider tip among the residents of Liesing.
