The 23rd district, also called "Liesing", is located in the southwest of Vienna and borders on the southern district border with Lower Austria. Liesing is home to around 106,000 people, and the district's population has almost tripled since 1960.

More than 100 km² of green space is available to the residents of Liesing on 320 km². This high proportion of green spaces and recreational areas, such as the Mauerer Wald and the proximity to the Lainzer Tiergarten, makes Liesing a sought-after district to live in. Via the Gütenbachtor in Liesing the nature reserve of the Lainzer Tiergarten is accessible to the public. The Lainzer Tiergarten is a zoo with free-ranging wildlife in an extensive forest area. The Lainzer Tiergarten is mainly located in the west of Vienna with a small part in the Lower Austrian community of Laab im Walde. Riverside Shopping Center

Between 2008 and 2012, more than 450 apartments were built on the site of the former Liesing brewery, and the Riverside shopping center with more than 55 stores and a wide range of gastronomic offerings was opened. The wholesale market Vienna, formerly called "Großgrünmarkt Wien-Inzersdorf", is the most important wholesale location for food in Austria. It sells not only fruit and vegetables but also flowers, meat and fish. About 70% of the total Austrian turnover of fruit and vegetables takes place at the Vienna wholesale market. The industrial area extends further from Inzersdorf into the area of Siebenhirten and from there into the adjacent industrial areas in the districts of Liesing, Erlaa as well as Atzgersdorf and is bordered by the southern railway line and the "Liesingbach". Among the best-known companies that have their headquarters in the 23rd district include the Austrian State Printing Office and the tool manufacturer Hilti Austria.

Vineyard in Mauer

One of the most important economic factors in Liesing are the Mauer winegrowers and their viticulture, which has existed since the late Middle Ages. Today, most of Mauer's winegrowers are located in Maurer Lange Gasse and are mainly known for offering their self-pressed wines in their own Heurigen restaurants. Unlike many Heurigen establishments in northern Vienna, such as Grinzing and Neustift am Walde, the Heurigen in Mauer are hardly ever frequented by tourists and are considered an insider tip among the residents of Liesing.
