Brigittenau is the 20th district of Vienna. The northern part of the island, formed by the Danube Canal and the Danube mainstream, was largely uninhabited alluvial land until the Danube was regulated in 1875. After that, development began in the late Wilhelminian street grid. The district is characterized by buildings from the Wilhelminian period, the interwar period and the post-war period, as well as numerous traffic and industrial facilities, which, however, have been gradually transformed into residential areas in the last two decades.

Augarten

The Augarten, with its iconic aeronautical defense tower, is a publicly accessible park with the oldest baroque garden complex in Vienna. In addition to a well-kept parterre garden with elaborate floral landscapes, it also offers an extensive area crisscrossed by shady avenues of chestnut, armor, linden, ash and maple trees, providing space for recreation as well as sporting activities for the local population and tourists. The plain concrete tower from the Second World War, located in the park, is now closed to visitors, but offers a contrasting beauty to the rest of the well-kept Augarten and has become part of the Viennese cityscape.

Praterstern

Praterstern is home to several subway lines as well as regional trains, making it one of Vienna's most important public transportation hubs. The Praterstern station, which was only rebuilt or largely rebuilt in 2008, is a huge multi-lane traffic circle that connects seven streets. It serves the residents of Vienna's second district as a public transport link to the city center and also as a local supplier with countless stores for everyday needs.

Millennium City

Millennium City in Vienna's 20th district is one of Vienna's largest shopping centers. On site, visitors will find stores and a wide-ranging entertainment program including UCI Kinowelt. It takes its name from the over 200m high Millennium Tower office tower - for some time the tallest building in Austria - which is used as an office and hotel and is visible far beyond the district boundaries.

Vienna Prater

The over 9km2 area of the Vienna Prater includes an amusement park called the Würstelprater, several bodies of water and a huge recreational area. The area belonging to the Prater, once auland of the Danube, is documented since the year 1162. At the end of the 20th century, numerous investments were made in the Prater's infrastructure. The Jesuit Meadow was converted into Vienna's largest playground with a toboggan hill and a winter snow-making system. For over 100 years, the Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel has been turning at the entrance to the Prater. The Ferris wheel is both a sight and a landmark of Vienna. A curiosity of the Wurstelprater is the Republic of Kugelmugel whose only inhabitant had proclaimed an own state in 1970, since his house was a sphere whereby the bearing surface is thereby only a point. However, since a point has no spatial extension, he believed that he was in a state-free space.

Danube Canal

The Danube Canal, once also called the Vienna Water or Vienna Arm, is the arm of the Danube running through the center of Vienna. The Danube Canal branches off from the Danube in the 19th district at Nussdorf and rejoins it at Praterspitz. Of Vienna's 23 districts, almost a third benefit from this extraordinary stretch of water: downstream on the right side, one after the other, are districts 19, 9, 1, 3, and 11; on the left side, districts 20 and 2. Especially on nice days, the bustle of people on the canal can be observed, especially at the level of Leopoldstadt, since a large number of restaurants and bars have established themselves here. Anyone who has experienced the afternoon sun here knows that the Danube Canal is a great place for relaxing moments with family and friends. Those who prefer to spend their free time in sportswear will also get their money's worth: upstream and downstream there is enthusiastic cycling, jogging, walking and much more.
