Explore the surroundings

In the southern part of Austria, characterized by a Mediterranean climate, numerous green oases and above-average hours of sunshine, lies the Styrian capital Graz. Graz not only captivates with its Mediterranean joie de vivre, but above all with its mix of baroque buildings and future-oriented modern architecture and attracts a large international audience. The wide range of cultural and educational opportunities as well as the proximity to the southern Styrian wine country make Graz an especially liveable city.

In 1999, the Inner City of Graz was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its buildings worthy of protection. The Inner City contains a historic old town center with the Schlossberg and the city park, bordered by the river Mur. In the inner city you will find numerous shopping centers, street markets, galleries, museums, pubs and restaurants. In terms of transportation, all important sights can be reached within a very short time by the excellent Graz streetcar network as well as by bicycle and on foot. As a university city with over 60,000 students, Graz is considered the fastest growing Austrian conurbation of the last ten years.

Old town of Graz

In 1999, the historic Old Town of Graz and its roofscape were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of their very good state of preservation and the visibility of the architectural development in the Old Town image. In 2010 they were extended to "City of Graz - Historical Center and Eggenberg Castle". This award is connected with the obligation to preserve the historical heritage with its building ensemble that has grown since the Gothic period and to harmoniously integrate new architecture. Most of Graz's sights are located in the old town. This extends over the entire Innere Stadt district.

Eggenberg Castle

Schloss Eggenberg in Graz is the largest and most important baroque castle complex in Styria. With its preserved original furnishings, the extensive landscape garden and the collections of the Universalmuseum Joanneum housed in the castle, it is one of the most valuable cultural assets in Austria. As the ancestral seat of the Eggenberg noble family, the history of its construction and furnishings shows the changes and patronage of what was once the most powerful family in Styria. In 2010, the castle was added to the existing UNESCO World Heritage City of Graz-Historical Center in an extension.

OYTER / Wellness Oasis

The 2,000 m² sauna landscape of the Graz oyster spa promises relaxation and recuperation, extending over 2 floors. Relaxation basins, brine basins, whirlpools, salt bath, steam bath, generous resting areas as well as guided special infusions are included in the Wellnessbad. The highlight is the outdoor sauna "Pearl" where wellness guests can benefit from sufficient space and completely switch off during infusions with music. Refreshment afterwards is provided either by a cold shower or a drink or a small snack at the sauna bar.

FH - Joanneum

FH Joanneum (own spelling: FH JOANNEUM) is a university of applied sciences in Austria with 4700 students, around 300 full-time lecturers and academic staff and around 960 lecturers. It offers degree programmes with a focus on economics, technology, health sciences and social sciences at its three locations in Graz, Kapfenberg and Bad Gleichenberg in Styria and is one of three Universities of Applied Sciences in Austria that do not charge tuition fees.

Mur Island

Island or ship? The extravagant steel construction by the US-American artist Vito Acconci cannot be assigned to such an easy task. The Mur Island Graz was commissioned on the occasion of the Cultural Capital Year 2003. One thing is certain: it represents a link between the river and the city, and it is a wonderful place to drink a coffee or enjoy a cocktail. While the Mur is bubbling away on the left and right, the Mur Island offers a completely new cityscape of Graz. The island has brought the Mur back to the people of Graz. Until a few years ago, the Mur was a river polluted by sewage. So it hardly bothered them that the Mur had dug itself a good 12 m deeper into its bed after its regulation in the 19th century. Now the river that separates and connects Graz has good water quality again and has become inviting.

Castle hill

The wooded Schlossberg rises in the middle of the city of Graz, only a few minutes' walk from the main square. Once upon a time, a castle was enthroned up there on a rock spur. All that remains is the bell tower with the bell "Liesl" and the clock tower, today the symbol of the city. Children and parents can climb the Schlossberg in Graz either by taking the 260 steps of the Schlossberg stairs or very comfortably with the glass Schlossberg lift, which even offers a panoramic view. This funicular was built as early as 1894 and, with a 61% gradient, pulls families up from the valley station in no time at all. In addition, various hiking trails lead up the Schlossberg, making the former castle hill a local recreation area.
